Some heart abnormalities are due to genetic alterations which can be inherited. They can be detected by diagnostic tests. In addition, there are Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) identified which are associated with higher risk of cardiac diseases. Though rare, healthy athletes have had sudden cardiac death due to some biological events associated with genetic condition, unknown to the athletes.
